Istanbul Airport to City Centre: Metro, Havaist, Bus and Taxi (2026)

The cheapest reliable way from Istanbul Airport (IST) to the city centre is the M11 metro. It costs ₺42.34 to Gayrettepe, where you change to the M2 for Taksim. Or pay ₺47.89 to Halkalı, where you change to the Marmaray for Sirkeci and the Old City. If you’d rather not change trains with luggage, Havaist buses go direct to Taksim, Sultanahmet, Beşiktaş and Eminönü for ₺470. The Taksim bus averages 90 minutes over its 48 km route. A metered yellow taxi to Taksim costs roughly ₺2,200–2,400 before tolls. The metro stops around 00:40, but Havaist still runs to Taksim at 00:30, 01:15 and 02:15.

The quick answer by destination

Havaist fares were read from its official ticket page. Metro and Marmaray fares are the distance bands in the city’s official tariff from 20 July 2026. The M11 and Marmaray don’t give transfer discounts.

M11 metro: cheapest and traffic-proof

The M11 runs from an underground station below the terminal. Follow the metro signs from arrivals down to the station. According to Istanbul Airport’s transport page, the arrivals subway area also has cafés, free toilets, a prayer room, a baby-care room and a money exchange office.

The airport sits near the middle of the line, so you can go either way:

• East to Gayrettepe (6 stops): Kağıthane, Hasdal, Kemerburgaz, Göktürk and İhsaniye come first. At Gayrettepe, change to the M2 for Şişli, Osmanbey, Taksim, Şişhane and the Golden Horn.
• West to Halkalı (8 stops): this section opened on 20 June 2026, so it’s missing from most guides. At Halkalı, change to the Marmaray suburban line. It runs to Yenikapı, Sirkeci (a short walk to Sultanahmet), and under the Bosphorus to Üsküdar and the Asian side.

M11 fares

Unlike Istanbul’s other metro lines, the M11 is run by TCDD Taşımacılık, the state railway operator, and charges by distance. These are the full-fare bands in the city’s official tariff from 20 July 2026:

Tap out when you leave. The gate charges the maximum fare when you enter, and refunds the difference when you tap your card at the exit. If you walk out without tapping, you pay the end-to-end fare.

Pay with an İstanbulkart, the city transport card, which you can buy and top up at the machines in the station. You need it anyway for the M2, Marmaray, buses and ferries. You can also tap a contactless bank card, but the city tariff charges bank cards the higher single-ticket rate and gives no transfer discounts. Our İstanbulkart guide explains what that costs you.

Hours and frequency

Trains run from about 06:00 to 00:40, roughly every 15 minutes. The full Gayrettepe–Halkalı journey takes 57 minutes, and the airport is near the middle, so expect roughly half an hour to either end. Add your onward connection on top.

Check for closures before you rely on the metro. The whole line was shut from 13 to 19 June 2026 for works, and Havaist added extra buses to cover the gap.

Havaist airport buses: direct, with room for luggage

Havaist is the airport’s official coach service. Its buses leave from the transportation floor, level −2, below arrivals, where Havaist has ticket counters. The airport says Havaist runs 11 routes into the city, serving dozens of stops.

The Taksim bus (HVL-9) timetable

From the airport, the Taksim route has 30 departures a day. The route is 48 km and takes about 90 minutes on average, depending on traffic:

00:30, 01:15, 02:15, 04:30, 05:30, 06:30, 07:30, 08:15, 09:00, 09:45, 10:30, 11:10, 11:50, 12:30, 13:10, 13:50, 14:30, 15:10, 15:50, 16:30, 17:15, 18:00, 18:40, 19:20, 20:00, 20:45, 21:30, 22:15, 23:00, 23:45.

There’s no departure between 02:15 and 04:30. Some departures stop at 4. Levent, Zincirlikuyu and Beşiktaş on the way. Others run express to Taksim. Havaist warns that routes and times can change because of traffic or operational needs, so check the timetable on hava.ist on the day.

Tickets and payment

• On board: Havaist says credit cards are accepted on its buses, including Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, Troy, Diners Club and Discover.
• Online: tickets from bilet.hava.ist are valid for 72 hours and can’t be cancelled or refunded. You can’t book a specific seat or departure.
• Fake sites: in February and September 2026 Havaist warned passengers about fake websites and sponsored ads using its name. The official site is hava.ist.
• Wheelchair users: request an accessible midibus at a Havaist counter on level −2 at least one hour before you want to travel.

The Sultanahmet line came back on 29 April 2026. It runs via Sirkeci and Şişhane and costs ₺470.

İETT city buses: the budget option

Istanbul’s municipal bus company, İETT, runs five routes from the airport. They serve Hacıosman Metro, Halkalı Marmaray, Mahmutbey Metro, Mecidiyeköy and Yunus Emre Mahallesi. They leave from the same level −2 transportation floor and are wheelchair accessible.

On these airport lines (H-1 Mahmutbey Metro, H-2 Mecidiyeköy, H-3 Halkalı Marmaray, H-6 Yunus Emre Mahallesi and H-8 Hacıosman Metro), the fare is two full fares. At the tariff in force since 20 July 2026, that’s ₺92.40. That’s cheap, but the routes are built for commuters. You’ll almost always need another bus or train to reach a tourist area, and journeys are long. They’re mainly worth it if you’re heading to Mecidiyeköy or one of the metro hubs anyway.

Taxis: door to door, at a price

Official taxis wait outside arrivals. Istanbul has four taxi classes, each with its own meter tariff. These are the rates in the city’s official tariff from 20 July 2026:

The meter charges by distance, but switches to the per-minute rate when the car is moving slower than 12.5 km/h, so traffic jams cost money. There’s no separate night rate. Our full guide to Istanbul taxi prices has worked examples.

What it costs to Taksim: road distances to Taksim are around 45–48 km, the same as Havaist’s route length. A yellow taxi works out at about ₺2,200–2,400 on the meter in moving traffic, and more if you sit in jams. Add any motorway or bridge tolls on the route the driver takes. For two or more people with bags, that can compare reasonably with several Havaist tickets.

How to avoid paying more than you should:

• Insist on the meter from the start. Don’t agree a flat price at the kerb.
• Know your taxi type. A black taxi’s per-km rate is about 70% higher than a yellow one’s.
• Have your destination written down, in Turkish if possible, and follow the route on your phone.
• Ask about card payment before you set off. Not every driver takes cards, so carry some lira.

Private transfers

Pre-booked transfers meet you in arrivals with a name sign and charge a fixed price. They make sense for late-night arrivals, families with small children or groups with lots of luggage. Compare the quote with the taxi estimate above, and check whether tolls and waiting time are included.

Which option to choose, by arrival time

• Daytime, light luggage: the M11 metro. It’s the cheapest, and traffic doesn’t affect it.
• Evening peak, roughly 16:00–20:00: metro plus M2 or Marmaray usually beats the road. Take Havaist if you have heavy bags and don’t mind the wait.
• After the last train, about 00:40: Havaist to Taksim at 01:15 or 02:15, or a metered taxi.

Before you leave the arrivals hall

• Get an İstanbulkart from a machine at the metro station. You’ll use it on the metro, trams, buses and ferries.
• Keep some cash. Havaist buses take cards, but some taxi drivers don’t. The metro station has a money exchange office.
• Sort mobile data so you can follow your route and check live timetables.

Landed at Sabiha Gökçen instead?

Istanbul has two airports. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side, and the fares and routes above don’t apply there. If you need to get between the two airports, Havaist runs a direct service for ₺515.
